“In Search of Norman Rockwell’s America”
Inspiration can come from unlikely places and for a page designer it may come in the form of a particular era. Right now at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, FL a collection of Norman Rockwell’s illustrations with period photographs is on display. This exhibit will be open until April 25 and is free to the public on Mondays. College students may enter with a student ID free of change any day of the week! This is really a great deal and worth the trip.
“In Search of Norman Rockwell’s America is a groundbreaking exhibition that pairs the work of American icon Norman Rockwell with images by award-winning photojournalist Kevin Rivoli.”

A Celebration of the Letterhead
The other day I received an e-mail with a signature that was longer then the actual message. The font was hideous in a color that was almost illegible. This type of bad design made me long for the days of hand written notes on letterhead! Then I found Letterheady.com, a site devoted to sharing classic, even famous, letterhead designs.
Get Inspired by Sarasota’s School of Architecture

Getting inspiration from our environment is a great way to switch up your layout design. Sarasota’s school of architecture is a collection of mid-century modern creations by the likes of Paul Rudolph, Victor Lundy, and William Zimmerman to name a few. The Sarasota Herald-Tribune offers more information here.

MoMA Adds “@” to Collection
The Museum of Modern Art in New York City as added the @ symbol to it’s architecture collection. The most notable use of the the symbol is in e-mail addresses, but it has also been added to the list of popular abbreviations used by text messaging addicts.
The symbol is used by designers to convey a technological edge, but in my opinion seems to cheapen the design. This may be in part due to its over use in clip art collections and very bad PowerPoint presentations.

Today is World Day Against Cyber Censorship
Today, March 12, 2010 online organizations and social networks are recognizing bloggers who risk their lives to speak freely. Not even a year ago free speech was being silenced by officials in Iran during presidential elections. China has also been criticized for limiting free speech or freedom of information by censoring Internet searches and access. Today marks the first step in an online movement by Reporters Without Boarders and other organizations to bring awareness to the censorship that many live under.
Social network users are encouraged to change their online status on March 18 to spread the word about blog censorship. More information about the movement can be found today on YouTube.com.
Here is an article by the Wall Street Journal about China’s latest warning to Google, Inc.
