Glossary
Alignment – The intentional placement of two or more objects within a design.
Balance – Using object weight or size to draw the viewer’s attention from one area to another, or “visual distribution of elements in composition.”
Bleed space – Additional space outside of the edge of the document (generally two pica) that ensures no white space will be seen one the document is printed and cut.
CMYK – Cyan (blue), magenta (red), yellow, and black.
Contrast – The difference between two or more objects. A noticeable or noticeable change in color, texture, or content.
Hierarchy – How important an object is based on its size, placement, or color within a page layout.
Kerning - Adjusting the space between characters (letters) of type.
Leading – The vertical space between lines of type.
Pica - A unit of measurement used in print design that is made up of 12 points. Six pica make up one inch.
Points – A unit of measurement. Twelve points make up one pica.
Proportion – A comparison of an object’s size within a page layout.
Proximity – The size and space of an object in relation to other elements in a design.
Repetition – Repeating shapes, colors, and patterns within a design.
Rhythm – Alternating design elements within a document.
Scale – The size visual elements in comparison with the overall design.
Spread – Also known as a “double truck” is made up of two pages
Texture – The visual appearance of a surface.
Typography – The visual arragement of typefaces or text.
Unity – “The control of variety.”
Variety – “Visual contrast” within a design.
